This year, August rainfall in the first 10 days of the month has topped monthly precipitation totals for the last nine years. It rained 12 days out of a two-week period spanning late July and early August, according to water department records, with some of those days producing significant totals. Aug. 2 saw .67 inches of rain, the following day had .48 inches, and on Aug. 5 it rained .46 inches…

Local rivers and streams are seeing healthy flows for this time of year. Hunter Creek near Aspen, as well as the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers have had above-average streamflow since late July or early August — after spending some time in July below the 30-year average, according to U.S. Geological Survey data. The Fryingpan River, which was fed by necessary releases earlier this summer to avoid a swollen Ruedi Reservoir from spilling over its dam, has been above average since mid-July.
